About Us

Sowood WI

Sowood WI was formed in October 2014 and has gone on to be one of the largest in the West Yorkshire Federation. We are like minded ladies of all ages, who get together for fun, friendship and learning through a wide variety of group activities, outings and events.

We are a busy WI and  we aim to deliver a wide range of activities, so that there is something for everyone to enjoy. The Bugle, our regular newsletter is circulated to members  and can also be found in the "useful information" section.

The WI

The Women's Institute (WI) was formed in 1915 to revitalise rural communities and encourage women to become more involved in producing food during the First World War. Since then the organisation's aims have broadened and the WI is now the largest voluntary women's organisation in the UK. The WI celebrated its centenary in 2015 and currently has almost 220,000 members in approximately 6,300 WIs.

The WI plays a unique role in providing women with educational opportunities and the chance to build new skills, to take part in a wide variety of activities and to campaign on issues that matter to them and their communities.

Sadly, due to the capacity of Sowood Community Centre, our membership is full for 2020 and so we are operating a waiting list policy for potential members who live in locally

If you would like to add your name to our waiting list, please fill in the application form on the "Useful information"page
